The couple moved to Brazil (where, ironically, Barbara’s father had been intending to go when he left Jerusalem). After a stint back in London, they moved to Miami – where Hulanicki’s heart was broken again when Fitz died in 1997. Hulanicki was born in Warsaw, Poland, to Polish parents. Her father, Witold Hulanicki, was assassinated by the Stern Gang in Jerusalem in 1948, and the family moved to Brighton, England. While studying from 1954 to 1956 at the Brighton School of Art, Hulanicki won an Evening Standard competition in 1955 for beachwear.
