Light water graphite moderated reactor
http://large.stanford.edu/courses/2024/ph241/barry2/ WebThe Chernobyl reactor was a light water-cooled graphite-moderated (LWG) reactor. This accident led to the release of a large amoimt of airborne radioactivity and the death of many of the responders. As a result of this accident, several countries with smaller nuclear power programs ceased the pursuit of nuclear power electricity generation.

WebFor example, all commercial light water reactors (LWRs) use UO 2 and other fissile oxides as the fuel to generate heat. Graphite and boron carbide (B 4C) have been used as moderator material in carbon dioxide–cooled nuclear reactor and as control rod material in LWRs, respectively [2 ]. The form and location of the moderator can greatly influence the cost and safety of a reactor. Classically, moderators were precision-machined blocks of high purity graphite with embedded ducting to carry away heat. They were in the hottest part of the reactor, and therefore subject to corrosion and ablation. In some materials, including graphite, the impact of the neutrons with the moderator can cause the moderator to accumulate dangerous amounts of Wigner energy.
